“Madelyne,
This [following quote] is from a buddy of mine. You are one of these people in my life. Glad we met, enjoyed many conversations, and learned great deal from our relationship. I have a great deal of respect for you. Please keep making the world a better place…one person at a time.
“We are all what we are, in large degree, because of others who have helped, coached, taught, counseled, who set a standard by example, who’ve
taken an interest in our interests, opened doors, opened our minds, helped us see, who gave encouragement when we needed it, who reprimanded
or prodded when we needed it, and at critical moments, inspired.” -David McCullough”

“I have known Madelyne Lawry for a number of years and worked with her and the Shared Resources staff in association with several legal organizations and State Bar committees. It is an exceptional group and offers a wide variety of critical administrative and support services necessary for the successful work of these organizations. Their work ethic is unmatched. They pay attention to details. They are organized, efficient and responsive. I have come to rely upon them for both project management and budget analysis and would not hesitate to utilize Shared Resources in other endeavors.”

“Dear Madelyn. I read recently that you have received the Negligence Section “Unsung Hero Award”. Forgive me if I have the wrong organization although there are many groups that would find you so very deserving that it makes little difference. I have never worked with anyone who had more dedication and efficiency towards accomplishing tasks than you. At MDTC, no officer, especially me, has been anything but eternally grateful for your dedicated service. The “Unsung” part of this award is truly a misnomer as many of us have been “singing your praises” for years. I’m really happy for you and grateful that I was able to work with you.”

“Congratulations on your receipt of the Unsung Hero Award. Having had the privilege of working with you when you began in the business, I know that you more than deserved this award!!! I also ( as always ) send you my very best. Enjoy the honor that comes with the award.”

“Finally, and arguably most importantly, my everlasting thanks to our Executive Director Madelyne Lawry and her team Valerie Sowulewski, Kyle Platt, and Caleb Sands. Through their tireless efforts this year, MDTC has, among other things, implemented a fast and easy online registration process, updated our section listserv so there’s an easily-accessible group of lawyers to run issues or questions by, and increased our social media presence, all of which increase the value of our organization and help keep us relevant in a constantly-evolving competitive environment.” – Michigan Defense Quarterly “President’s Corner” (Volume 32, No. 4 – 2016)

“At every single annual meeting I attended, the outgoing MDTC president went out of his or her to thank you for your support, leadership, guidance and institutional memory over the past year. Every single outgoing president remarked that there was no way he or she could have survived without you at his or her side.”
“I had assumed this specific acknowledgment of all that you had done for MDTC was a formality, an exaggeration, or excessively good manners on the president’s way out the door. Boy, was I wrong.”
“It was not until my term as president of MDTC that I was able to fully understand and appreciate the exuberant praise sung by every president to serve MDTC before me. I set out an aggressive agenda for my term and you worked like Hell on new membership initiatives and helped create new ways to boost attendance at events.”
“On literally day one, you helped me gear up to tackle the dreadful “Patients First Reform Package, “ a series of measures that terrified our lawyer members. The efforts to prevent these bills from becoming law broke new ground for MDTC’s public policy agenda and required tons of additional work for you and Shares Resources. As with every other agenda item during my term, you were fully supportive and enthusiastic to take on additional responsibilities on behalf of MDTC.”
“So, of course, when my term was coming to an end, I found myself in the same exact position as every president who came before me, thinking of new ways to echo the same refrain: “I could not have done this without you, Madelyne. MDTC is blessed to have had you as Executive Director all these years.”

“Madelyne, MDTC is nothing more than a few ideas, phone calls and emails without you. You give meaning to every vision the Board has and in fact, you give vision at times when the Board has none. “On the occasion of honoring Madelyne for unending support and devotion to MDTC, I can only begin with “WOW” and end with what a true honor it is to know you. In due time someone will write the Legend of Madelyne as a myth – since most people who do not know her well simply would not believe the true stories of her capabilities and accomplishments throughout the years. The story of Madelyne will include the tales of leading people known for dissenting opinions on even the simplest of questions, to focus and precision in the name of the civil litigator profession. Drawing upon years of experience with complex topics, challenging budgets, methods of marketing and generally getting busy people to work on important things as volunteers when they don’t have much time to give, Madelyne has improved the lives of everyone she’s worked with and the organization. I have always appreciated the way Madelyne can point leaders in the right direction and motivate them to great success. Like any hero or individual of distinction, Madelyne makes the work look easy. Madelyne has a love for what she does and for MDTC and she has enriched my life in many ways.”

“Madelyne,
For so many years, your knowledge, skills, experience, and dedication have been essential ingredients for the continued success of MDTC. Thank you for your years of exceptional service to MDTC.”

“To Madelyne and MDTC’s Past Presidents,
Madelyne became MDTC’s Executive Director during my presidency in1991-1992. Before Madelyne, each President (actually each President’s secretary) handled the responsibility of scheduling board meetings, preparing agendas, maintaining MDTC’s membership lists, new applications, associated correspondence, etc. MDTC’s growing membership made this a daunting task and more efficient operation, and organization was needed. Madelyne stepped in and a whole new era began. Minutes of meetings, meeting agendas, and membership lists that were accurate, and reliable, suddenly became routine! Ideas to grow MDTC that Madelyne learned from other organizations she served were successfully implemented. It is important at this point however, to make sure that any inaccuracies/insults that might be advanced by some of the older/senile past presidents of MDTC be addressed. IT IS NOT TRUE THAT MADELYNE WAS HIRED BECAUSE OF CONCERN THAT I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO EFFECTIVELY EXECUTE MY PRESIDENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES!! The fact is that prior MDTC (long) past presidents had created such turmoil and disorganization that the location of current, meaningful records in the multiple files that were unceremoniously delivered to each incoming president was impossible. I will not mention names but one need only look at the list of past presidents who preceded me to comprehend the scope of the disastrous situation that confronted myself and Madelyne the beginning of my presidency in 1991. Madelyne made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear! But in all seriousness Jim Kohl should be recognized for his persistent efforts to convince MDTC to hire an Executive Director and in particular, to hire Madelyne. It should also be emphasized that Madelyne brought one of the most genuine, and friendliest personalities to our organization which has remained constant and unchanged. Madelyne’s reassuring smile when you step up to the registration table or enter a meeting room is infectious…, and reassuring. Madelyne’s ability to remind us of forgotten agenda items, names of members or speakers and a myriad of other details made our jobs as presidents much easier, and significantly more effective. In short, Madelyne Lawry, and her dedication and skills, have made MDTC the successful, professional organization that it is today. Thank you, Madelyne. I cherish your friendship and have great admiration for your professionalism and skills.”

“To the Guardian Angel of the MDTC: let me add my voice to the cacophony singing your praises. Thank you for making us all look way better than we deserved. Your devotion, loyalty and brilliance have kept the organization on track and growing, for which we are eternally grateful. Your always amazing ability to keep us in forward motion and supply what we have needed to succeed can be no better illustrated than by reference to your acquisition of the dinosaur costume that provided the perfect send-off to President Barney (and nearly resulted in my singing with the Vienna Boys Choir). My best to you always, Pat”

“Thank you for being a great friend over the years. Over the course my membership in the organization, you always encouraged me, and occasionally prodded me, into taking a more active role in the MDTC. Without your encouragement, I may not have taken advantage of the great opportunity to work with wonderful folks in an important organization. It has been a fun and rewarding experience that I might have otherwise missed without your help.”
“In addition to the organization and structure that you bring to a group of lawyers (I have heard it analogized to herding cats), you have always gone out of your way to make everyone feel welcome at our meetings and in our organization. The warmth and personal impact that you have had on our organization of trial lawyers has not gone unnoticed by Barb and I, and everyone else who has had the opportunity to meet and work with you.”

“I am in France on a long-planned trip in the St. Emilion Wine Region, so this Electronic Epistle is the best I can do to metaphorically lift my Chateau Canon to the best danged Association Executive ever.”
“How do you memorialize several decades of such consummate service?”
“One might start the panegyric by noting that if Madge did not have her unfailingly sunny disposition and her joie de vivre, she would have been justified in her going postal years ago and in dispatching selected or all of the Dead Presidents en masse with an Uzi. Certainly, by now, she would have been pardoned or at least she would now be out on Work Release. Probably with the American Medical Of Freedom. And a Pension.”
“Before I make her head swell even more, I want to relate my first meeting with her at her first Annual Meeting on Mackinac Island, years ago. Madelyne had just replaced her Predecessor who had the look of Medusa—and the disposition—of the Farmer’s Wife in the Grant Wood Painting, American Gothic. Except with a mouth full of Baking Soda. Truth to tell, any respirating creature would look friendly after a season with that Witch, so Madge, get over yourself.”
“Madelyne was there with a Young Homo Erectus she had just started to date (he put me in mind of the dictum that some guys are put on this earth to prove that we are not done with evolution yet) and, with waves of rose-colored generosity on my part, he can best be described as, well, sorta, kinda, well, really, really, really beneath her. The fellow clearly did not warrant her company (let alone her hand) and, worse yet, he followed her around with fits of stalking jealousy when her impressive Clients talked to her. My guess is that he collected Personal Protection Orders with pride.”
“My personal mission was to tell as many funny jokes and be as playfully mirthful as I possibly could with the Mascot-Daughter-Like Madelyne to show the Uni-Bomber up as a Pictorial Refugee from the DSM-V Manual, arrayed as he was with a Cowlick of ascending neuroses and sporting uncounted descending darknesses.”
“Well, it worked too well. In a four-hour drinking spree, the assembled MDTC stalwarts all got drunker and funnier, and Guest Visitor Jeffrey Dahmer was unable to compete with the scintillating personality of, say, Sean Fosmire, for example, so, not to brag too much, he was not up to my joke-telling repertoire. So I drove it on home as I saw this increasingly unhappy loutish hulk as someone to exterminate for the protection of sweet Madelyne and for good of the order as I wanted this schizoid out of our group, and, I mean for life. He was so out of his social depth, Lozier sounded like Gore Vidal (you have to be 60 to even know who this is) compared to this Cro-Magnon Throwback, who perfected the linguistics of grunts.”
“Well, it worked too well. The Upstaged Future Abuser of Women departed the Island that night in a total rage at last boat, leaving Madge stranded, and exactly how did you get home without the creep, Darlin?”
“Enough jocularity. This Organization, simply put, would not exist without Madelyne Lawry’s years and years of attention to detail, indefatigable activity and charm, constant promotion, business acumen, loyalty, refusal to be defeated and workaholic steadfastness to the point of monomaniacal virtue, if not bravery, all with humor, decency, good-nature, and saintly patience.”
“The claim was always that when Guy Lombardo retired (again, for you under 50’s –who? Wait! Who’s that, again?), he was going to take New Year’s Eve with him. When Madge retires, we will flip the Bible Open to Chapter Eleven and close this Sucker Up because Jumpin’ Joe Dimaggio (under 50’s looking around, mystified: Who? Who’s that again??) will no longer be under the ball when it comes down in the outfield. Madelyne Lawry will take Michigan Defense Trial Counsel into the sunset when she pulls the pin. Make Book on it.”

“Each succeeding MDTC president during my era, attended the summer “notable persons summit” held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island. I will always remember Madelyne introducing me to her fellow executive administrators by saying “Wow, look whom I get to work with this year!” What a compliment and morale booster!”
“All of us can give examples of Madelyne Lawry’s professionalism, poise and polish during the one year we served as president. But usually, that year of fear/elation had been preceded by 7 or more years serving as chairpersons, board members, and officers. My first time serving as treasurer for MDTC was more harrowing for me than assuming the presidency. My wife Lesley had come from a career in banking, so I had never balanced so much as one checking account statement. At the first board meeting of the year, Madelyne handed me the MDTC financial statements, telling me to provide a verbal summary to the board. Upon seeing my look of panic, Madelyne gave me a 2-minute tutorial accompanied by the encouraging words “You can do it”, and her bright smile. I was saved by Madelyne in the nick of time, which experience would be repeated over and over again.”
“I was on the MDTC board when Madelyne “took the leap” of leaving her employment circumstance to start her own company. I am proud to have been one of many (John Jacobs, Ed Kronk, Mike Malloy, Jim Gross) who encouraged her, and then enthusiastically referred her new clients like the MSB Negligence Section. My confidence in referring her was rewarded by the rave reviews I got back from the lawyers involved.”

“Madelyne – When you and I met, you were a gorgeous, bright, forward-looking young woman with a great future. I had hair. The latter is the only thing that has changed. After nine years under your kind-hearted tutelage, I ascended to the presidency of our fine defense organization, buoyed, as were all my predecessors and successors, by your enviable skill sets and marionette-like deftness when we were in need (quite often) of direction, etiquette, and substantive preparation. I will be forever grateful for that unending professional and personal kindness, and the ever-ready smile you somehow pulled out of the hat even in the tensest of moments. The fact that you are called upon often for your input on such important and wide-sweeping matters is without question a testament to your reputation among nonprofit associations. It is a privilege to have you a part of this association and my privilege to have worked with you for so many years. Really a great achievement.”
“I began my time with MDTC as a Regional Chair. Madelyne was the first person to call me to welcome me to the Organization. She offered him insight and leadership. She is the quintessential mentor. Not just of me, but of everyone who has ever held a leadership position with this Organization. My first impression of Madelyne became an overriding component to my view of our Executive Director. There is no one single person who has greater respect for the reputation of the Organization and certainly no single person who has a greater love for it. Her love of the Organization is only overshadowed by her commitment to act as a mentor to everyone in the leadership. She became a dear friend to me and is most certainly the reason I enjoyed success during my time with MDTC. She may well have a hidden military background simply because with Madelyne, no one is left behind.”
“I have many stories to tell, like the time Madelyne ushered everyone off a deck that was hopelessly swaying. Or, the time she looked at what was left of a challenge and took one more brew for the team to get our name on a ceiling. Or the times she pushed more than one of us into a cold shower to get ready for the banquet. Or helped us find our way back after a day of golfing or pub crawling (not me, of course. That would be Terry). I believe that she has a hidden superhero cape. She must. She is the hero of MDTC.”

“As usual you performed your now expected but still very much appreciated great magic in effectuating another outstanding Annual Meeting! Having been involved with MDTC from its inception, I feel I have a vested interest in its continued success. Your efforts from the time I was a lot younger and you were a little younger when we first met has allowed that to occur. I would have loved to have been a mouse in the room ( no one would say I could be anything but a rat ) when you dealt w/ the Crystal Mountain Resort Manager about the sound system. I just want you to know that I very much appreciate your ongoing consistent very hard work and even more our long time friendship. Thank you so much for another superb effort! Please, also, give my sincere thanks to Val for her hard work.”
“Maj: We go back from the very beginning of what has turned out to be MDTC’s long time salvation – that, of course, being you. When I met you I knew you were not just some hot looking chick but someone very special. I could not, however, have imagined just how special1 As the ever hardworking, persevering, good-hearted, fun-loving, enthusiastic, very bright ( both intelligence and personality-wise), and classy professional you deserve far more than this token thanks and honor. You have become the guardian of our Association’s history, promoter of its continued existence, and a great herder of old, middle-aged and young cats ( as you may have heard trying to lead lawyers is oftentimes like herding cats). You have rightfully promoted needed changes as the world and the practice of law changed. You have taken these old Presidents (then somewhat younger) often kicking and screaming into the 21st Century! Through all our group’s trials and tribulations and there have been many, you have steadfastly stuck with us and always looked out for the organization’s best interest. No one could have been as lucky as MDTC and frankly all of us past Presidents in having your continued loyalty, trust, and subtle leadership. You only have to talk with present and former Presidents of other SLDOs to appreciate just how fortunate we are in Michigan to have had and continue to have you as our Executive Director. Thank you so much for all you have done and do. If you have not guessed by now this is your now old in age but always young in spirit friend Lozier. My best to a Super Lady and great eternal friend!! I’ve been working with Madelyne and her wonderful staff at Shared Resources for many years now. They do an amazing job. I don’t know how we would hold the Michigan Appellate Bench Bar Conference without them!

I have known Madelyne Lawry for a number of years and worked with her and the Shared Resources staff in association with several legal organizations and State Bar committees. It is an exceptional group and offers a wide variety of critical administrative and support services necessary for the successful work of these organizations. Their work ethic is unmatched. They pay attention to details. They are organized, efficient and responsive. I have come to rely upon them for both project management and budget analysis and would not hesitate to utilize Shared Resources in other endeavors.

I have been a member of MDTC for decades and a board member for the last four years. The infrastructure Madelyne and Shared Resources provide to MDTC help the board members to make critical decisions. We would not be able to effectively and efficiently lead the membership without Madelyne’s and Shared Resources’ assistance.
